Best Blackout Curtains for Your Baby's Nursery

Did you know that babies and toddlers *typically* sleep SO MUCH BETTER in a darker room?

If you have been following me for a while you will know that I suggest darkness for sleep. So here’s a little more detail on why:

WELL.... SIMPLY PUT, LIGHT IS JUST REALLY STIMULATING.

Even for us as adults, but especially for babies and toddlers.

EVERYTHING is so exciting so even a flicker of light is going to get their little brains thinking and going. This is GREAT!! We WANT them to do this... just not when they need to sleep, lol.

A dark room can be *especially helpful* in the following scenarios:

  • If your baby has super short naps regularly
  • If your baby has frequent early morning wake ups (4-5:30 am and NOT wanting to go back to sleep).
  • If your baby gets easily overtired/overstimulated
  • In the summer when it's still light at bedtime, and when the sun comes up at 5 AM.
  • If your newborn has colic/ or is just generally fussy.

OK, HOW DARK ARE WE TALKING?

Well, every baby is different, but here are 3 variations of darkness depending on YOUR baby and family.

➡️ Chill babies and toddlers sometimes don’t actually need it to be totally pitch black & they’ll do absolutely fine just with the regular curtains. You'll know if you have one of these babies because they will sleep great in their room even in the bright daylight.

➡️ Most babies and toddlers, however, really do get excited and stimulated by little things. The darkness of blackout curtains or blinds provides them the opportunity to wind down, settle, and get ready for a nice sleep.

➡️ Extra fussy babies: maybe those who get overtired easily, or they may have had colic as a newborn. These babes really do a lot better in a totally pitch black room. Like...can't see your hand darkness.  This is where you may need to be creative like doubling up on both blackout blinds and blackout curtains and door cracks. (I did this with my firstborn for a couple years, but after 3.5 years she chilled out and just has normal room darkening curtains).
