Does My Baby Need to Sleep in a Dark Room?
Aug 04, 2022Did you know that babies and younger toddlers sleep SO MUCH BETTER in a pitch black, cannot see your hand, dark dark dark room!?
If you have been following me for a while you will know that I suggest darkness for sleep. So here’s a little more detail on when and WHY:
WELL.... SIMPLY PUT, LIGHT IS JUST REALLY STIMULATING!
Especially for babies and toddlers finding their place in the world. EVERYTHING is so exciting so even a flicker of light is going to get their little brains thinking and going. This is GREAT!! We WANT them to do this... just not when they need to sleep!
But why so dark?
➡️ Well, every baby is different, and some babies and toddlers are really chill & don’t actually need it to be totally pitch black & they’ll do absolutely fine just with the regular blackout curtains.
➡️ Most babies and toddlers, however, really do get excited and stimulated by every little thing. The darkness provides them the opportunity to wind down, settle, and get ready for a nice sleep.
WORRIED YOUR BEBE IS SCARED OF THE DARK?
Make sure to read this blog to learn how to tell, how to handle it, and when to introduce a little night light if needed.

For the first year of Lily’s life we used these paper blackout shades from Lowes (USA) for like $7. You can also get them as a 6 pack from Amazon here. These work really well underneath these affordable blackout curtains.
The combination of these both works SO WELL and only costs about $25-35 USD depending on the size of your window. -
Simply taping black trash bags/cardboard boxes to your baby’s bedroom will do a great job at blocking out light in a pinch too. Let’s face it, your baby doesn’t care what it looks like, and it’ll help them sleep better!
WE ARE STILL STRUGGLING WITH SLEEP… EVEN WITH A DARK ROOM!
